Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year!

Our buildings are sparkling, and teachers and students are ready for another terrific year in our great school district! We are excited to provide wonderful educational opportunities for our students. We also greatly appreciate how supportive our parents are, and we enjoy having you visit our buildings, and participate to the extent you can. Parent and other adult volunteers have contributed greatly to our success.

I’d like to call to your attention to some changes that are in process:

1)  The parking lot of the Western High School/Middle School/Administration complex has been reconfigured to increase safety for buses, cars, and pedestrians. We have added a “drop-off loop” for Middle School students at the north end of the lot, in front of the administration offices. Please note that NO CARS ARE ALLOWED between the guard rail and the front of the HS/MS during school hours. However, we have provided angle parking (including additional spaces for our handicapped visitors) between the new guard rail and the front of the HS/MS that you are welcome to use AFTER 4 PM and on weekends.

2)  New district-wide student information system software (PowerSchool) is now being utilized. This new application will provide us with many more features than did our previous software. In addition, it will replace the PIV (Parent Internet Viewer) that you have utilized in the past. Parents will receive information on setting up a new account to view information (grades, attendance, schedule, etc.) for their child over the Internet. We also plan to provide parents with the ability to directly enter the phone numbers that you would like us to use when we activate a Global Connect mass phone call.

3)  Look for changes to our district website in the near future. We are in the process of implementing enhanced features, including a calendar system that will allow visitors to our site to “overlay” calendars, and print them if desired. For example, if you have children attending an elementary school and the middle school, you will be able to “layer” those two calendars together, to see the events at both buildings at the same time. We’re working hard to avoid scheduling conflicts at our facilities, as well as providing accurate and timely event information to our parents and community.

4)  Due to financial constraints, we have had to make some adjustments to our bus runs. We have stopped going down dead-end roads, and do not place bus stops outside the boundaries of our district. Although we must make cuts, we want to continue to keep any cuts away from the delivery of our core curriculum, and transportation was one of the areas impacted. We certainly wish that we did not have to make any cuts, but in the current state economy, that simply isn’t possible.
