Western High School currently has multiple complete computer labs, a
smaller journalism lab, and a large lab in the Senior
Transitions classroom. Instructors have their own desktop computers for
student record keeping and professional work. Video
projection equipment enables the teaching staff to use interactive
software programs in any classroom. Every machine has high
speed access to the internet, multi-media (sound, video)
capabilities. Instructors also have access to streaming video
for use in their classrooms through Unitedstreamingtm.
There are over 2,000 full length videos and 20,000 video clips with
new releases added throughout the year. Student activities are
also available. All educational material is aligned to the
Michigan State Standards and is compliant with the No Child Left
Behind Legislation. A recent scientific evaluation showed an
increase in test scores by an average of 12.6% by students using
this service. Instructors can search for videos by title,
keyword, subject, state standard and other options.
Another essential component of the Western School District is the
careful selection of software that enhances and strengthens the
curriculum at each grade level and that supports teacher
productivity. Western has an excellent base of over 100
instructional and teacher productivity software products that
students and staff have access to including high tech software like
CAD (computer assisted drafting), PowerPoint
(multimedia authoring), and a wide variety of CD and online
resources (including on-line classes).
Students and staff can now broadcast audio and video to any and all
rooms in the entire district. Additionally, digital camera,
scanning, and a variety of desktop publishing materials are
available. |
