Character Counts
At
Parma Elementary

Trustworthiness
Respect
Responsibility
Fairness
Caring
Citizenship

Recently the children at Parma Elementary attended an assembly which introduced the Six Pillars of Good Character.  Each month, our classes and the school will focus on one of the Six Pillars   At the end of the month each teacher will select a student who exemplifies the pillar being focused on for that particular month.  Students will be recognized for their good character each month at a recognition reception.  Parents will be invited to share in the student recognition.

Another way our children can demonstrate the Six Pillars is to participate in the community Service Program available at all Western Schools, called “Project Leaps”.

Community Service can be a large variety of activities such as:

Caring for a neighbor’s pet
Preparing food for a shut-in
Assisting in raking leaves or
     cleaning debris in the neighborhood.

The possibilities are endless!  This includes service activities you do as a family, church or scouting activity in which you give time to others.

Anytime you involve your child in a (non-paid) activity that helps the community, it counts!

The minimum requirements for your child to earn a Community Service Award at the end of the year are:  K-2nd grade=5 hours and 3rd grade-5th grade-10 hours.

Community service record sheets are available at www.westernschools.org.  From the main menu select School Buildings, then select Parma Elementary,  then select Our School and lastly select Community Service.  Forms are also available from in the school from your child’s teacher.  Completed forms must be turned in to the school office by April 23, 2004.

Questions may be directed to Carol Mohlenhoff, WSD Community Service Coordinator at 841-8910.

We encourage you to browse www.charactercounts.org. for even more ideas and information in order to support our children at home with The Six Pillars of Character.
