MARCH is reading month!!
Greta Garbage Visit
Greta Garbage is an in-school “field trip” presented by Dahlem
Center. This presentation helps us understand our science and social
studies curriculum about the environment and recycling and concerns
right here in our county. Greta will be here at Warner during the
afternoon of Thursday, February 15, 2007. The program is partially
sponsored by the Junior League of Jackson which reduces the cost to
$2.50. Students are asked to bring in their donations before
February 15th.
Cascades Humane Society
We have been reading with the Mrs. Gibbs first grade class this
year as “Book Buddies”. We have started a service project for the
Cascades Humane Society. We are making little cat toys that are sold
for a donation at local veterinary offices. The donations help
support the Humane Society. On March 1, 2007 we will tour the humane
society facility, just off Elm Street in Jackson. Our tour is at
11:00 AM and will last about an hour and fifteen minutes. Since we
will be gone from Warner during our lunch hour, we have arranged
with the Spring Arbor Marinos for a pizza buffet. The buffet cost,
including drink and tax, will be $4.00 per student. Parents are
welcome to join us for either the tour or at lunch or both.
Reading Month - RAH
Reading Month starts in March. The goal for each student in our
class will be to read books at his or her level an average of 15
minutes a day at least five days a week, or a minimum of 75 minutes
a week. This is a goal and there are prizes. Parents are requested
to verify the minutes their child reads, by recording the minutes in
the student planner and signing their name. Please do not just
initial. Remind your child to Read At Home! RAH! RAH! RAH! The more
we read; the better we read!
Many fun activities are planned for reading. Watch for the reading
month calendar.
Our studies for February and March
Our student teacher, Mrs. McCaffery returned to finish her
student teaching. She presented a science unit on Earth Materials to
both classes. After animals, rocks are probably are favorite Science
topic. Good luck, Mrs. McCaffery with your job interview.
In Math, we have done well with long division. We will keep
practicing both long division and multiplication of large numbers
throughout the rest of the year, especially at the application
level. (Translation: more problem solving or story problems!) Our
next unit in our book is fractions! We will use various hands-on
fraction pieces throughout the unit.
Yes, there is math homework.
We completed our mystery unit in Language Arts. We will read a
variety of material during February, again concentrating on higher
level thinking skills. In March we will read our unit called
“American Snapshots” which corresponds nicely with this year’s
reading month theme.
Accelerated Reader Program
Students are assigned to read a book of their choice, and their
own level and PASS the test on the computer. Due dates are February
15, March 8th and March 28th. This is one book every three weeks.
Fifteen to twenty minutes is allotted of class time is allotted for
reading these books. Students are also expected to read at home.
