Warner 5th Grade

January/February News

Updated 1/16/07

Interest Fair:
Saturday, Feb. 23rd is the district wide Interest Fair. We are requiring each 5th grader to do a project of their choice in any of the core areas. We will provide 1 display board per student. The student will then receive an extra credit grade in whatever subject area they did the project. They may choose to do more than one. Planning will begin at school, but the majority of the work will be done at home. Ideas could be: researching an author and summarizing some of their books, doing a science investigation, creating a math game, researching a historical figure or event, the possibilities are endless. Students are able to do another project of their choice also. If your child would like to do another project they will need to order a display board. There will be a note from Mr. Cooper soon that you will need to fill out and send back. You do not have to fill this form out if your child is only doing one assigned project.

 New Student Teacher
Hi! Your child may have already mentioned having a new face in the classroom, so allow me to introduce myself! My name is Kylie Avery and I am a Spring Arbor University student. I have the privilege of spending 10 weeks student teaching with Mrs. Huntzinger and your 5th grader! I am from Jackson and love spending time with my large family and my friends. Some of my interests include sports, reading, and traveling. My favorite traveling experiences have been spending three weeks in Zambia, Africa, serving the homeless in New York City, and gutting houses this past December in the New Orleans area. I love serving people and I view teaching as one of the greatest opportunities to serve children. I look forward to getting to know your child, and I would love to meet you as well. Please feel free to e-mail me at avery@westernschools.org. I am very excited for the weeks to come!

Social Studies:
We will continue to study the Revolutionary War and it’s effect on our country. The children seem quite interested in the war so please ask them what they know about it at home!

Language/Reading:

The students are just starting a new Book Club book. Please remind your child to read &/or work on their journal at home if they are behind.

In our reading book we are learning about different catastrophes while working on different language skills such as analogies, root words, and improving vocabulary.

Science Update:

We are starting our preparation for our Earthworks Field trip where students will be taking the role of a scientist for a day. We are still in need of volunteer parents. Please contact us if you are available. Permission slips went home Jan. 11th. As we prepare for Earthworks we will be continuing on with our Caretakers unit. Both of these fit together well.

Math Update:
Unit 5 test on Jan. 24!

As you probably have noticed we’re working with fractions, percents, and decimals in Unit 5 and will continue to further our studies during Unit 6. We have a project coming up called “How Would You Spend A Million Dollars”. Be looking for information coming home soon.
