Welcome to
Mrs. Oliver's THIRD GRADE website!
Happy New Year!
January is such a great time for great learning to take place! Below
you will see a few things that will keep us busy in the classroom!
Research Paper –
We will begin researching on a topic (to be picked by the end of
this week) that your child has chosen. Please help him/her determine
a theme that interests them. After gathering data, each child will
put together a research paper.
Interest Fair – Each student will be participating in the
Interest Fair. They will design their projects at home and at
school. The district is providing the boards to be used. The topic
will be the one that was researched for the research paper. Projects
are due at school February 20, to be presented to the class. The
Interest Fair will be at the high school on Saturday, February 24
and all are invited to attend at some point during the day. (Mr.
Cooper will transport them to the H.S. on Friday)

Pioneer Living – We go to
Pioneer Living at Ella Sharp Museum on February 27 from 9:00 to
2:00.
* We would like to weave Indian headbands. Each child needs one
skein of yarn. A variegated color makes a very pretty headband.
Please have your child roll the yarn into a ball before they bring
it in.
* Please send in a bar of ivory soap. We will be carving our soap
and leaving them here on display for the following week.
* We need 2 lb. coffee cans here as soon as possible. Before you
send in the coffee can, please put 2 holes in the
coffee can, one on either side so I can attach twine for a handle.
You can make the holes by using a drill or a hammer and a large
nail. If you choose to use the nail method, please hammer down the
jagged edges. If you can’t get a coffee can, please send me a note
in your child’s planner and I will send one home with your child so
you can put the holes in the can.
* If possible, I would like the children to dress like pioneers on
our field trip. Boys can wear jeans or bib overalls, white shirt
(mom’s blouse will work), suspenders, coonskin cap, straw hat, etc.
Girls can wear mom’s skirt, apron, blouse, shawl, and a bonnet.
I have bonnets the girls can borrow for the day.
* I’d like the children to have a “pioneer lunch.” For example,
bread, cheese, cold chicken or venison sticks, apple juice or milk,
etc. All this makes our pioneer day seem more realistic. |
Subjects:
Math
We continue to work on
place value and multiplication. Our test on Unit 5 will be the end
of this week. Your child should be practicing their multiplication
facts at night.
Science
Solids, Liquids, and Gas: Properties of Matter. There are a couple
more weeks in this unit.
