Some of our Western Band classes were fortunate enough to learn about the songwriting business from an accomplished local artist. Dave Caruso, who has composed many songs, written music for local television specials and performs for live audiences; answered questions and took the students through the song writing process. Starting with a single word, Mr. Caruso helped them weave their thoughts into clear, concise lyrics that told a tale and touched the listener. One class started with the word "taco" and wrote a song about unrequited appetite, while another class started with "high school drama", then added "trauma" and became a tale of deception with people hiding behind "masks".
All in all, they learned about the changes the music industry had gone through over the years and the highlights of a songwriting career.
