Instrumental Music Curriculum
Section 2
State of
Michigan Music Education Benchmarks
Introduction
The State of Michigan has five
content standards for music education. They are:
1.
All students will apply
skills and knowledge to perform in the arts.
2.
All students will apply
skills and knowledge to create in the arts.
3.
All students will analyze,
describe and evaluate works of art.
4.
All students will
understand, analyze, and describe the arts in their historical,
social, and cultural contexts.
5.
All students will
recognize, analyze, and describe connections among the arts; between
the arts and other disciplines; between the arts and everyday life.
For the instrumental music
department’s philosophy, we attribute content standard one to the
“reading” area of music instruction. We attribute content standard
two to the “writing” and “speaking” areas of music instruction. We
attribute content standards three, four, and five to both the
“reading” and “listening” areas of music instruction. More
specifically, we will incorporate benchmarks from each of the five
content areas with activities appropriate to the age level and the
sequence of learning therein.
