Solo and
Ensemble Festivals
These are festivals where students
can play a solo piece (for example, a flute solo with piano
accompaniment) or in groups of two or more (a woodwind duet, brass
quintet, a percussion octet). This piece is generally selected with
the consent of the director and student(s). The piece should take
into account the proper difficulty level and suitability for the
Festival. The students travel to the festival and perform the piece
in front of an adjudicator, and they give the students verbal and
written comments and a rating ranging from I to V. If students earn
a II or I, they are awarded a medal. This experience is highly
recommended, as the judges are selected on their experience with
students and mastery over the instrument the student plays.
To participate, please follow these
guidelines:
1.
Let
Mr. Bickel or Ms. Downing know in advance of the deadline listed in
the schedule.
This gives you enough time to find music (for soloists, it also
gives you time to hire an accompanist).
2.
Make
sure your piece is an original copy.
You may perform with a Xerox copy, but BY LAW the copy for the judge
must be an original.
3.
Number every measure in the piece.
This is a rule also, so that the judge can make comments on the
passages you are playing.
4.
Make
sure you have a piano accompanist if the music calls for one.
A rating can not be issued unless the music is played with the
piano, unless the music specifically indicated that it is
unaccompanied.
5.
Time
your piece and make sure that it exceeds two minutes.
If a group, a few pieces can be played to add up to that time
limit. You can’t add repeats to make a piece longer.
6.
Meet
frequently to practice, and keep track of your time.
Feel free to sign up to come in after school.
7.
Secure a map and schedule in advance of the festival and make sure
you have a ride.
Plan on arriving to the site and checking in to your section an hour
before you play.
8.
Make sure that your instrument, map, two copies of music, and
schedule are taken home the night before the event.
9.
Dates are listed in the “Schedule of Events” section. |
