Trigonometry                                       Length:  18 weeks                                Credit:    .5                             Grade level:           11, 12

                                                                Prereq:    Successful completion of Algebra I and one other mathematics course

 

A one-semester course designed for the student that needs further training in mathematics, but not at the rigorous level for the student planning on Calculus.  Students needing Trigonometry for a technical school, trade school, business or non-engineering training would choose this class.  The class will develop a level of competency in Trigonometry that could lead to further study of mathematics.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH               

Ninth Grade Physical Education      Length:  18 weeks                                Credit:    .5                             Grade level:           9

Upon entry into ninth grade physical education, students will be expected to demonstrate satisfactory standard performance levels in the following areas: locomotor skills; object control skills; postural, nonlocomotor and body control skills; and rhythmical skills.  Remedial instruction and work will be provided when necessary.  The high school Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum (EPEC) will be instructed.  In addition, students are to develop and maintain healthy levels of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, selected joint flexibility, and body composition.  Our physical education curricula will involve daily exercise sessions emphasizing lifetime activities designed to develop and maintain cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health throughout the life span.  Also, cognitive aspects relating to the health benefits of physical activity will be emphasized.  A weekly structure of vigorous aerobic based activity on M, W, F; and sport skill instruction on T,TH in the following three areas:  individual sports, team sports, and rhythmic activities will be the focus.  Ninth grade physical education will also expect and emphasize personal and social character trait skills. Evaluations will include pre/post fitness, sport skill, and written knowledge assessments.   Successful completion of ninth grade physical education is a Western High School graduation requirement.

 

Ninth Grade Health                             Length:  18 weeks                                Credit:    .5                             Grade level:           9

                                               Prereq:    None

 


Ninth grade health is a comprehensive curriculum instructed through a variety of methods designed to educate and prepare our students with the skills necessary to achieve and maintain life long health.  Our curricula includes the following areas: personal, consumer, and mental health; behavior modification; relationships; the life cycle; family health; marriage and parenthood; reproductive systems; communicable and non-communicable diseases; fitness and health; substances and abuse; and safety, first aid, and emergencies.  Successful completion of ninth grade health is a Western High School graduation requirement.

 

Advanced Sport Education                 Length:  18 weeks                                Credit:    .5                             Grade level:           10, 11, 12

                                                                Prereq:    Successful completion of Ninth Grade Physical Education and instructor's written
                                                                                permission
 

This course will provide the mature student with the opportunity to receive advanced individual and team sport skill instruction, game

strategy, sport history, and a working knowledge of rules and sportsmanship applicable to class participation.  Realizing that you must
be fit for your sport rather than your sport making you fit, the training schedule is as follows: M, W, F will be devoted to the traditional sport experience while T, and Th will be intense aerobic fitness and strength conditioning workouts using the exercise principles of warm-up, muscle development, target heart rate exercise, and cool-down/stretch.  All students will be evaluated through both pre/post fitness and sport skill assessments, and written exams.  This one semester course may be elected twice during a student’s high school career.

 

Aerobic Fitness                                   Length:  18 or 36 weeks                      Credit:    .5 or 1.0                  Grade level:           10, 11, 12

                                                                Prereq:    Successful completion of Ninth Grade Physical Education

 

Aerobic fitness is designed for those individuals prepared to make significant changes in their fitness levels and take responsibility for their own health and quality of life.  The class consists of four workouts and one lab/lecture each week.  Students will be introduced to fitness components, pre/post fitness assessments, workout principles, goal setting/assessment, components of wellness, and exercise leadership principles.  An extensive variety of aerobic activities designed for student enjoyment provides an upbeat and challenging experience for all.  This course may be elected repeatedly.  Ninth grade students who successfully complete first semester PE 9 may elect this fitness course second semester.
