This is the third year
for the Student Mentor Program at Western High School. The
program was developed to assist incoming 9th grade students who
might find the transition from middle school to high school too much
of a challenge. These students are assigned Study Academy for
one class period per day. During this time, the students are
taught the "skills" necessary to be organized, and can receive
assistance on class work. High School staff members also
volunteer to "mentor" a student from the Study Academy.
Generally, the 9th grader is already enrolled in one of the mentor
teacher's classes. The mentor teacher tries to assist the
student and provide a positive role model for the student. The
program has proven to be a success thanks to the volunteers from the
Western High School staff. |
