                                          Fall '07

WELCOME BACK!

We hope you have enjoyed a fun-filled and relaxing summer. Please take a moment to stop in and see us this fall. We can answer your questions about graduation requirements, credits, and college/financial aid information. We can discuss current and future personal or career goals. We can provide a listening ear, and we always have candy. Come see us! We are here to HELP YOU.

- Mrs. Callender (A-K) and Mr. Smith (L-Z)

Introducing Mr. Smith!

New to the Counseling Office this year is Mr. Smith who is taking over for Mr. Burns. Mr. Smith will be working with students who have the last name of L-Z. A graduate of Spring Arbor University, he comes to us from Northwest High School where he taught American History and Psychology. Mr. Smith has also taught at a charter school in Hillsdale. He is VERY excited to be a part of WHS and is proud to be a Panther. Please stop down and give him a warm welcome to WHS.

October 17th ~ Not just another ordinary day!
Western High will have four different grade-level activities the morning of October 17, 2007!

9th grade: MEAP Social Studies Assessment
The purpose of social studies is to develop social understanding and civic efficacy (the readiness and willingness to assume citizenship responsibilities and to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a democratic society.) The MEAP Social Studies test will measure the level of student knowledge in this area.

10th grade: PLAN Test
PLAN® helps tenth graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success and provides information needed to address school districts' high-priority issues. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years. Results will be discussed with students in a counselor presentation.

11th grade: PSAT/NMSQT Test
PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT I: Reasoning Test and SAT II: Writing Test. It also gives students a chance to qualify for National Merit Scholarship Corporation's (NMSC) scholarship programs.

12th grade: WHS’s First Annual College Fair!!We will have representatives from up to 30 local, state, and even out-of-state Universities. The College Fair will take place from start of school until 11 am on test day. This is a fantastic opportunity for our Seniors to explore their college options and ask any questions they may have from actual university representatives.

What an enormous opportunity for all WHS students to gain insight and information regarding college and career planning!
