Welcome to Western High School
Counseling Office Services

We offer the following services through the Western High School Counseling Department.  If you would like further information concerning any of these listed items, please contact our HS Counselors - Josh Smith (841-8276) or
Becky Callender
(841-8283).

Preparation for College

They visit senior classrooms to discuss college applications, ACT retakes, and to survey 
             seniors on their interests.

They arrange for College Representatives to visit WHS.
Parent letters are sent out on scholarships, the college application process, and financial aid.
Evening presentations are put on for parents of seniors concerning college applications,
             scholarships, and financial aid.

Scholarship information is linked to the Western homepage.
Senior Transcripts are checked and a credit audit is done.  Parents are notified by 
             registered mail if there is a danger of a senior not graduating.

Final Transcripts are sent to colleges.
Counselors schedule and coordinate all dual enrollment students (enrolled in both HS and
             college at the same time).

Write Letters of Recommendation for students when asked.

Testing Services

Coordinating the PLAN test (precursor to the ACT given to all sophomores).  An evening
             parent presentation is then held for all sophomore parents to help them interpret the
             results of this test.

Coordinating the PSAT test (precursor to the SAT given to all juniors, this is also the        
             National  Merit Qualifier).  Counselors visit junior classrooms to help interpret the
             results of this test.

Coordinate all HS MEAP testing, including retakes.
Enter all testing scores on student transcripts.
Visit junior classrooms to discuss college plans, applications, and the ACT test.

Student Scheduling

Update EDP�s on all students (academic counseling guidance) to get data for building the
            Master Schedule

Help build the Master Schedule.
Schedule all students.
Audit all underclassmen transcripts over the summer to check for proper schedule
            placement.

Balance classes and make schedule changes at the beginning of each semester.
Coordinate Career Center visits, testing, and enrollment.
Assist with the Freshmen Orientation Process

 

Career/Employability Skills Services

Help coordinate job shadowing for all sophomores.
Make classroom presentations to all sophomores on Career Cruising (replaces MOIS).
Work with Career Prep Coordinator.

Other Student Services

Check interim reports and send home letters to students with excessive failures.
Coordinate the Student Mentor Program for entering freshmen that are identified as needing
            extra assistance.

Work with the Assistant Principal on Truancy cases.
Register all new students.
Provide personal counseling and connections to community help agencies.
Input all transcript data, keeping track of G.P.A.�s, class rank, and fulfillment of
            requirements.

Help coordinate AP testing.
Work with Special Education Dept. for proper placement of students with special needs.
Help coordinate scholarships and awards for Senior Honors Assembly.
Provide homebound services in special instances.
Assist with counseling services at Options Center.
Organize Military Recruiter visits.
