Technology Western High School currently has seven complete computer labs and several multi-station classrooms in special areas. All of our classroom sized computer labs have projectors for multi-media presentations. In the classroom, instructors have their own computers for student record keeping, professional work., and classroom presentations. Students and staff have access to high tech software like CAD (computer assisted drafting), PowerPoint (multimedia authoring), PhotoShop (graphics software) video streaming and a wide variety of CD and online resources. Video projection equipment and Smart Boards enable the teaching staff to use interactive software programs to enhance student learning. Video announcements originate from the Western School District production studio each morning. Students and staff can broadcast audio and video to any and all rooms in the entire district. Additionally, digital camera, scanning, and desktop publishing materials are available. Other tools that allow for greater parent communication include the Parent-Internet Viewer (PIV) and E-Link. These systems allow parents to access up-to-the-minute information on their student’s grades, attendance, demographics, and lunch account activity at any hour of the day or night. In addition, our Web Site (www.westernschools.org) is updated daily and contains a wealth of information on all facets of our school. Expanded Curriculum The Core Curriculum refers to those courses of study essential to a basic high school education. Western High School meets or exceeds the State Board Model Core Curriculum Outcomes in physical education and health/fitness, mathematics and science, language arts and social studies, and for those students who elect foreign language. Also, all seniors complete a course called “Senior Transitions.” In this class, students must complete an electronic portfolio. This process verifies they have mastered the state core curriculum standards and benchmarks. Copies of the curriculum are available to the public in the office of the principal or from the curriculum director. The expanded curriculum includes elective courses in forensics, debate, theater production, English literature, sociology, psychology, Quest, pre-calculus, calculus, parent and child development, individualized literature, yearbook, journalism, computer technology, instrumental music, vocational and practical arts, video production, industrial arts, computer-aided drafting, and other courses. In addition, the expanded curriculum provides for the special needs of students with specific learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, and emotional or developmental needs. Twenty-six credits are necessary for graduation. Students must take Senior Transitions, three and one-half English credits (including Oral Communications), three social studies credits (including World Cultures, Practical Law, Government, U.S. History, and Economics), three science credits, three math credits, physical education, health, and a computer class.
Graduation requirements for our 2006-2007 incoming freshmen will
undoubtedly go through some change as new legislation is adopted by the
State of Michigan. |
