Adult and Community Education at Western School District Student Handbook 2005 - 2006 G R A D U A T I O N R E Q U I R E M E N T S English 3.0 Math 2.5 Science 2.0 Social Studies .5 American History 1.0 Government .5 Computer .5 Electives 10.0 TOTAL 20.0 CREDITS MAY BE EARNED BY: 1. Completing an adult education class which earns .5 credit per semester. 2. Transferring credits from a previous high school, adult education program, trade/ business school, correspondence school or college. A formal Transcript Release Form from Western Adult Education, signed by the student, must be sent to the student's previous school. 3. Work and life experiences. In order to receive credit in these areas, verification must accompany the request for credit. Transcripts of courses, tests taken, military service records or employment verification must be submitted prior to credit being granted. No more than 10 additional experience credits may be earned toward an adult high school diploma. The final decision of all credits awarded will be at the discretion of the Director of Adult Education. WORK EXPERIENCE (Maximum 8 credits) Credit will be granted for full-time work experience at the rate of .5 credit for six months of work with the same employer. A letter from the employer stating dates of employment must be on file. Credit will be awarded based on these guidelines when demonstrated job growth has been documented: 20 - 39 years of age = .5 - 5 credits 40 + years of age = .5 - 8 credits HOME MANAGEMENT (Maximum 4 credits) Credit may be granted to adults who have assumed the major responsibility for the management of a home and family. An essay stating the basic responsibilities must be on file. The responsibilities outlined may include: Child care and parenting, personal relationships, budgeting, food preparation, house-keeping and other related topics. LIFE EXPERIENCES (Maximum 4 credits) Credit may be granted to adults who have life experiences which have greatly impacted their lives and which has enhanced their growth and educational process. An essay stating how travel, business or other life experiences has impacted their lives must be on file. COMMUNITY SERVICE (Maximum 4 credits) Credit may be earned for volunteer service to the community through church or agency activities. One-half credit may be earned for each 100 hours of service. A letter from the sponsoring agency stating hours volunteered and services performed must be on file. GRADING SYSTEM A - Excellent Progress .5 credit B - Good Progress .5 credit C - Fair Progress .5 credit R - Repeat 0 credit I - Incomplete 0 credit W - Withdrawal from Class 0 credit
Student's who receive a "repeat" grade must repeat the course. A grade of incomplete will remain in the student's file for one year. If the work is not completed within one year then the incomplete will become invalid. Exceptions can be made at the teacher's request and with approval from the Director. Western Adult and Community Education will mail copies of grades to the students at the end of each semester. INDEPENDENT STUDY A student may receive approval from the Director to work independently if health, work schedules or family obligations do not permit attendance in the classroom. Weekly contact must be made with the teacher and a planned program with stated objectives must be completed. INSTRUCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS Most academic and elective credit classes meet for 14 weeks from 7:55 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 5:55 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and provide 56.25 hours of instruction. LABS Many instructor guided classes are offered in a lab setting. The lab is an experience which allows students to complete required course work in an individually planned program of study.
Learning Lab classes are offered Monday - Friday to provide scheduling options for all students. Most academic classes are offered in the lab, including: English, Math, Social Studies and Science. PERMANENT RECORDS A complete file for each student is located in the Director's office. All records are confidential and are only seen by the student and Adult Education personnel. A written request must be submitted to the Adult Education office before a copy of student records will be released. REGISTRATION Adult education students may register for classes as soon as the class schedule for that semester has been posted.
